I recently read this, written by Sam Harris:

Ask yourself: how has "elitism" become a bad word in American politics? There is simply no other walk of life in which extraordinary talent and rigorous training are denigrated. We want elite pilots to fly our planes, elite troops to undertake our most critical missions, elite athletes to represent us in competition and elite scientists to devote the most productive years of their lives to curing our diseases. And yet, when it comes time to vest people with even greater responsibilities, we consider it a virtue to shun any and all standards of excellence. When it comes to choosing the people whose thoughts and actions will decide the fates of millions, then we suddenly want someone just like us, someone fit to have a beer with, someone down-to-earth—in fact, almost anyone, provided that he or she doesn't seem too intelligent or well educated.

I've created a new website that I'd like some feedback on.

http://empg.info

It's a free service where you send a text message when you fill up your tank and the website keeps track of your mileage.

I haven't been updating my LJ much since Zaadz has blogging and it fits best for me to do that sort of thing on the site I work on, right? But I wanted to chime in here and mention I'm flying to L.A. on Wednesday. I'll be there through Sunday visiting with the CEOs of Zaadz and the rest of the team in Southern California. I'm quite excited to get out there and meet everyone and to see what L.A. is like. I hear there are more vegan restaurants in L.A. than in all of New England (which isn't saying much, Connecticut has approximately ZERO).

I've got to get up to Boston sometime soon too. My friend Shawn, aka B00ga here on LJ, is up that way, and one of my co-workers just moved from Hawaii to Boston, so I'm sure I could make a good day and night out of it!

Anyhow, if you care to follow any random blogging I do, you can get a feed at http://joshua.zaadz.com/blog.

Peas Out.

Today I'm trying something different. I'm trying different things as I settle into working from home and try to keep myself highly motivated and productive. Today I though I'd try not working from home. Instead I've grabbed my work laptop and headed off to a local Panera Bread cafe (happens to be next to a hair place so I got my mop cut first).

Well, I don't plan on doing this all day.. first off I didn't bring my power cord and wifi sucks this puppy dry in about two hours. But moreso, I've realized that people bring their children here during the day. Now, I'm not so much a kid person really. I love my niece, and occationally a child can be fun to have around, but certainly not when I'm trying to get SQL queries working.

So working from Panera is an option.. they have free wifi which is nice.. but the screaming children are making this a low choice for me. My favorite local veg cafe is getting internet soon and I'll try again from there.

I know, it's a rough life, but someone has to live it.

That's it, I'm completely done with DSL.net. It's been a good run, nearly 6 years. I was looking back through my old LJ posts from around that time (March '00) and it's fun to see how excited I was.

If anyone is or knows anyone who might be interested in working at DSL.net, they're hiring for my position.

http://www.dsl.net/company_careers_unix_admin.php

It's not a bad gig. Let me know if you need more info.

I also just signed up to go to RailsConf '06 in Chicago this summer. Good times.

Tonight I gave my resignation letter to DSL.net. I've accepted a position doing Ruby on Rails development and a dash of SysAdmin stuff for a *gasp* startup. They're really cool, full of vegans and folks I dig. Check them out at Zaadz.com. "Zaadz" is a dutch word. I don't hold that against them though.

I got introduced to the CEO Brian Johnson by my friend Erik Marcus. I've work with Erik for some time now on his website Vegan.com.Over the course of about a month I started working for zaadz part time and this week they offered me a full time position! I had to wait around the office at DSL for my boss to return to her office and give her the news (and the letter). I had talked to her a week or so before about it, mentioning that I had an opportunity I was pursuing. She took this all pretty well.

If anyone wants a job doing linux sysadmin stuff in Connecticut, give me a yell. Postfix, OpenLDAP, some of everything. PHP experience a big plus, willingness to endure some C# also a plus.  Solaris experience very good too (not that I've got any!). Nerf weapons allowed, but the natives are armed and dangerous too.

Wow. I've been with DSL since the spring of 2000. It's been a crazy ride, but I was fortunate to get in there and now a new direction opens up, just as fortunately. I'm leaving a few very good people. Folks I hope can do great things and get happiness out of it. I'll miss them. I won't miss getting paged for spammers though!

Current Mood: excited

Tracy & I are back from Florida. We had a good vacation and I think the cruddy weather here is punishment for us.

We only went to two real parks while down there, Universal and Busch Gardens, both of which we've been to before. We did get a few new coasters in, and CoasterCounter.com says:

COASTER COUNT: 75 (60 Steel, 15 Wooden)
PARK COUNT: 13
CoasterCounter Rank: 900 of 2809

Distance Traveled: 41.28 miles / 66.43 km (29.96 miles / 48.22 km Steel and 11.32 miles / 18.21 km Wood)
You've Travelled Futher than
* Channel Tunnel (Chunnel) (31 miles / 49.89 km)

Good stuff. I hope to break 100 when I go on my honeymoon in California.

Tracy has now moved home for good. We just need to figure out where to put all her stuff!

Not to be trendy or anything, but I'm learning Ruby and the Rails framework for a project I hope to get involved with soon. I like things about a lot of languages so I'm not sure if Ruby is going to displace any other language I might use for a given project, but it's a fun tool to have available and I can see myself using it quite a bit.

One week from today I'll be in Florida! W00t!

The project I'm trying to get involved with is called Zaadz. They're in very early stages of build a great website. It's part social network, part progressive change community, part business development, part a lot of things. Check-check-it: http://joshua.zaadz.com
